Women in Construction Week: Bianca Marcu, Commercial Assistant

At MCG Construction we're proud to have an inclusive and diverse workforce. This week (7 - 13 March) we join the national Women in Construction campaign to shine the light on our fantastic female colleagues and get to know some of them a little better.

Name: Bianca Marcu

Job title: Commercial Assistant

How long have you been working in construction? Just coming up to 3 and a half years, I originally started working in construction in a Resourcer role.

Have you noticed more women working within construction since you started? Yes, and I would say I’ve noticed an increase of women throughout construction as a whole and not one role in particular.

How did your friends/family react to you choosing construction as your career? I have to say they were a little surprised maybe even sceptical in the beginning. But ultimately, they all supported me as they could see it was a career I enjoy.

Have you ever felt daunted by being in a male dominated industry? No, I haven’t. I’ve always just appreciated the chance of being able to prove that I can perform my job just as well as any male colleagues. I didn’t have any pre-conceptions about working in construction as I had friends working within the industry, so I had a fair idea of how it would be.

What do you enjoy the most about your job? Every day is different, every day is a challenge and that’s what makes it great for me. Looking forward to the next 5/10 years, as I am enjoying my role so much now, I believe I will still be working within this sector.

Can you describe a typical day at work? I work alongside our Quantity Surveyor, but I am also assisting our on-site Logistics Managers with any ad hoc commercial queries. There are lots of tasks to complete on a daily basis, but most importantly I collate all the information needed for our monthly applications, keeping track of costs and ensure the budget is not exceeded.
