Women in Construction Week: Marcia Coviello, Recruitment Consultant

At MCG Construction we're proud to have an inclusive and diverse workforce. This week (7 - 13 March) we join the national Women in Construction campaign to shine the light on our fantastic female colleagues and get to know some of them a little better.

Name: Marcia Coviello

Job title: Recruitment Consultant

How long have you been working in construction? I started working as Resourcer originally in May 2017, so just coming up for 4 years in the construction industry.

Have you noticed more women working within construction since you started? Yes, I’ve noticed that the number of women working within construction is growing, I’ve noticed an increase on site definitely. We have female Traffic Marshals, Hoist Drivers, Slingers, Banksmen (Bankswomen?) and I also have women working as Logistic Managers.

How did your friends/family react to you choosing construction as your career? When I started my friends said ''In construction? Are you sure?'' and then I said ''Why not?''.  I had previously worked for 20 years for the Italian Government, dealing with people, papers for pensions, taxes, and Italian citizenship, so I fancied a change. Initially I was scared because everything was so new but then I got used to it and now I really like this job.

Have you ever felt daunted by being in a male dominated industry? The first time that I was on site I was thinking ''What am I doing here?'' but getting to know people and working to help them made me feel more comfortable. It made me think ''This job is not just for men; women also can do it.''

Did you have any pre-conceptions about the construction industry? At first, I was scared because I thought the men would think that we can't do our job as well as they can, but then I realised that there is a lot of women working hard and very well in this sector and those thoughts went away.

What do you enjoy the most about your job? I am very grateful for my job, I really like that it is helping our client with what they need to complete a job and at the same time helping the worker who is looking for a job. This job also gives you the possibility to meet new people.

Can you describe a typical day at work? My days are very unique, you never know what to expect. There are positions to fill, documents and compliances to deal with, visiting and meeting people at sites, etc. Busy busy!
