Project managers play an integral role in helping deliver a successful construction project. They plan and coordinate the delivery of a construction project from start to finish; ensuring that milestones and key deliverables are achieved safely, within the agreed timeframe and budget.
The typical duties of a construction project manager involve forecasting and outlining scopes of work, costings and budget, quality control, delegating work to staff on site, overseeing the buying of materials and equipment hire, and keeping track of spending. As a project manager, you’d work closely with the client, architects, surveyors and other building professionals to ensure everything runs smoothly on site.
There are several routes to become a construction project manager; a university course or apprenticeship are usually the main routes. You could do a university course such as an undergraduate degree in construction management, project management or business, or a postgraduate qualification in construction project management. An apprenticeship is undertaken onsite and is a great way to gain experience and qualifications at the same time, they usually take around two years to complete.
